1. What is Jango?

Jango is a unique fusion of Modern-Jive with Argentinean Tango. It allows you to dance intricate footwork patterns as well as turns, twists, and arm styling. You will recognise many movements from modern-jive, but with a big difference: there is a very clear lead and follow of the footwork through out, which creates a strong connection and a smooth and elegant style. You will also recognise many tango steps and moves, but in a more open and relaxed style, using a more malleable embrace that can shift into turns, pretzels and baskets!

There are some important foundation moves that allow you to mix modern jive moves with tango moves easily, which you can see in this short video. You can learn all of these at one of the Foundation workshops or courses..

2. Your Instructors and Assistants

Amir has danced Tango for the Princess Royal, performed with Nicole Cutler (of Strictly Come Dancing Fame), with London Swing Dance Society and for the Royal Opera. He is a graduate of the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, and has studied Tango around the world and in Buenos Aires. He has been invited to teach and perform Jango for almost every major modern jive organisation in the UK, holding workshops for Ceroc, Blitz, Rebel Yell, Jive Addiction and many more.

Kate and Will have won and placed in most of the major UK competitions in both modern jive freestyle and showcase categories. They are often invited to perform and teach around the country. They combine elements of tango, ballet and latin dance into a rich and unique modern-jive style.

Catriona and Hayley often assist Amir in workshops and classes. Hayley has performed professionally with the Hammeretts, is a former UK Modern Jive champion, and has performed with Amir all around the country. Catriona is a former World Pro-Am champion, teaches and performs with Amir, and runs West Coast Swing classes and workshops around the UK. Check out www.westcoastswing.co.uk for more info!

3. The Jango Card Programme

With a Jango Card you can track the progress of your Jango Journey. For every hour of Jango tuition that you participate in, you get one Jango Stamp! After collecting a certain amount of stamps you get upgraded to a different coloured card. This will allow you to keep track of how much work you have done, and will give you access to invitation only workshops, special events and exclusive discounts!

You start with a white card, and then work through yellow, to green, to blue, to brown and then black. At each level there are certain skills and moves you should make sure you master. The first three are outlined below. You can apply for a Jango card at any time; simply ask for an Application Form at one of our Jango Classes.

White Card

At this level you should build awareness of some basic footwork patterns. You need ten stamps on your white card to move up to Yellow. The key moves you should master are:

Starter Step
Jango First Move
First Move Side Step
Manhattans
Extended Manhattans
West Manhattan
Eskimo
Forward and Back Ochoes

If you can lead or follow these in freestyle it assures you a great foundation in basic footwork. This will springboard you into more complex footwork patterns, musicality and connection with your partner!

Yellow Card

At this level you should master leading and following pivots, changes in height, and timing of steps. You need 20 stamps on your Yellow Card to move to Green. If you can lead and follow the following steps you are well on your way!

Rotating Manhattans
Lunges
Cross Body
West Manhattan to Half Giro
Box Step

Green Card

At this level you need to start incorporate sacadas, barridas, boleos and ganchos into your freestyle. You need 20 stamps on this card to move up, but you will also need to attend a special moving up workshop so we can help you with these core skills. Make sure you get at least one of the following into your repertoire:

Giro
Forward walking sacada
Backwards walking sacada
Boleo
Gancho
Barrida

Blue Card and Beyond

This is where you start to dance sequences of leg interactions, volcadas, colgadas and other Nuevo tango inspired movements that are sure sign of a Jango Master.
